John Carroll Catholic High School Field House Renovation + New Athletics Strength & Training Facility
Since 1992, John Carroll Catholic High School’s athletic campus had remained largely unchanged. In 2024, the school engaged Shelby as design-build partner to help realize a long-term vision spanning both academic and athletic facilities on campus. Shelby joined the project in its earliest planning stages, working alongside the school and design team to shape a two-phase transformation of John Carroll’s Field House and stadium grounds.
Phase I delivered a complete interior and exterior renovation of the existing Field House, expanding locker rooms, coaches’ offices, and laundry space into a more efficient, modern layout. The scope also included a renovation of the press box and refresh of the public restrooms and visitor’s locker room. We upgraded the concessions space and built out a new waterproof data/IT room with a dedicated roof structure to house the low-voltage infrastructure serving the stadium’s scoreboard, sound, and video systems. Asphalt surrounding the football field, track, stands, and baseball complex was replaced with roughly 1,200 cubic yards of new concrete. Our field house and stadium transformation was conducted alongside installation of Shaw Sports Turf NXT 2.0 on the football field, a Beynon 100 track for cross country and track, and the nation’s largest high school Daktronics video board, requiring tight coordination and scheduling. John Carroll is the only high school in the country authorized to display the official Heisman Trophy logo on its field, a distinction earned in honor of JCCHS alumnus and Heisman winner Pat Sullivan, for whom the field is named.
Phase II added a new, ground-up Athletic Training Strength and Performance Facility, connected to the renovated Field House by a canopied walkway. Designed to bring collegiate-level training technology to the high school level, the facility houses a training / workout room equipped with Perch camera systems that tracks depth, displacement, velocity, and power output for every athlete in real time, along with force plate technology that measures the physical forces behind each movement, allowing coaches to monitor data in real time, reducing injury risk and optimizing performance. A center turf strip within the weight and training room gives athletes a dedicated space for speed and sprint training year-round. The building also houses two above-ground hydrotherapy recovery tanks, an x-ray machine, and motorized treatment tables. A dedicated 120 SF nutrition space and bar area equipped with commercial grade refrigerator, freezer, and smoothie equipment allows trainers to prepare athletes pre and post workout fuel. The space also includes wet and dry storage and large icemaker. Offices for coaching staff and a shared restroom complete the space. A new brick retaining wall was also built to support the high and long jump track and field events displaced by the new facility’s footprint, rounding out a strength and training environment that rivals programs at the collegiate level.
